Photography has always pursued the real. Peter Dooley has turned that pursuit inside out.
Tree Art is a series born from contradiction. The camera becomes here an instrument of distillation. Each work begins as a photograph: a specific African tree, rooted in specific ground, under specific light. It ends as something closer to a meditation. Dooley then burns that image back onto archival paper, branch by branch, leaf by leaf — building the tree by burning the image into the artwork with light, exactly as the Sumi-e master builds it with ink. What he chooses to omit receives no light. It remains the paper itself: pure white, uninterrupted.
This is the Sumi-e inheritance, translated through an entirely different discipline.
In classical Sumi-e, the brush and carbon ink seek truth over likeness. The Japanese master bypasses the particular appearance of a tree to find what the tree is beneath it. Dooley arrives at the same destination by the same method, applied through a different medium. Both build selectively. Both trust the white ground to carry as much meaning as the mark itself.
Across the series, broad-canopied African trees occupy the centre of each frame with the unhurried authority of subjects that have long since settled into their position. Trunks rise with deliberate torque. Limbs divide and subdivide in the precise logic of structures built for load and light simultaneously. Canopies spread wide, dense at the heart, dissolving at the margins into individual branches that reach into white space without destination. Below each tree, the arid ground and scattered bush of the African bushveld and Kalahari are rendered in the same selective accumulation: present enough to locate the subject in its landscape, absent enough to refuse that landscape any dominance.
What the white does is liberate.
The surrounding world recedes because it has been given only what it needs. The tree holds because it has been given everything. That differential is the visual argument of the entire series: landscape as context, never as subject.
The detail the process retains is where photography earns its place in a tradition that has historically resisted the camera. The bark carries its history in its surface. The branch junctions hold the evidence of decades of growth decisions. Only light, returned mark by mark with the patience of someone who knows exactly where each branch ends, can render biological fact at this resolution while simultaneously achieving the meditative stillness Sumi-e demands.
Peter Dooley has made something the two traditions have long approached from opposite directions: the territory where photographic precision and painterly essence share the same silence.
