The Fine Art Trade Guild standard
Level 2 (High level) and Level 3 (Mid-level) Framing
We use the FATG standard as our conservation framing guideline.
This standard sets the requirement for high level protection using conservation methods and conservation materials
Previously known as Conservation Framing level, Level 2 framing gives a high level of protection for your artwork, whilst looking good and enabling you to view your framed work to best effect. It should give virtually as high a level of protection as Level 1 framing and in many markets, for example the USA, no distinction is made between the two.
What to expect:
By using conservation quality materials and the best techniques, the framer can give your work protection from physical and mechanical damage, airborne pollution and acids generated by many framing materials.
Suitable for:
Objects and artworks that are to be preserved for future generations, and collectables
Original artwork
Limited edition prints of moderate to high value
Conservation framing (level 2) requires that all processes affecting the artwork be fully reversible. In other words, what you have framed can be returned to its former state, i.e. prior to framing, at any time up to 20 years, assuming that the artwork is not inherently unstable.
Level 3 (Mid level) Framing
Mid level protection using good quality materials and methods
What you can expect:
Previously known as Commended Level, Level 3 framing should visually enhance the artwork and will give a moderate level of protection from physical and mechanical damage, airborne pollution and acid damage. A windowmount or slip should normally be used to visually enhance the artwork and distance it from the glazing.
Processes do not have to be reversible so make sure your framer knows if the chance to get your work back to its condition prior to framing is important to you.
The target time for this level of framing is around five years in normal conditions. Always have items and artwork that you value framed with the best possible materials; this will help them give you pleasure for longer.
Level 3 framing gives you a wider choice of mountboard colour options than Level 2 and some artwork will look better when dry mounted, a process that can also help disguise previous damage but that is usually not readily reversible.
Level 3 framing is suitable for replaceable artwork of limited commercial and/or moderate sentimental value and where visual appearance is important. The target lifetime assumes that artwork is not inherently unstable.
Level 3 framing is not recommended for high value limited edition prints or original artwork

Acrylic Face Mounting
Acrylic Face Mounting is an innovative method to mount the face of the photo to acrylic or iron-free glass with special UV inhibited silicone rendering a high gloss appearance and 3D-like effect enriched with vibrant colours and deep blacks. Mounted on a strurdy 18mm aluminium frame with flush mount hangers behind, the image not only hangs parallel with the wall but also appears to float.
We use fine art paper for the most exceptional rendering of your art. The final product is stable and can withstand temperature and humidity changes. This process is free of bubbles and silvering often found when using double-sided adhesive.
DiaMount® to Plexiglass (RSA clients only)
Manufactured using 3mm Plexiglass, to which the images are face-mounted. Once the image has rested, it’s then backed by a rigid aluminium composite material (ACM), like Dibond®, encapsulating the print in an airtight sandwich. This process offers you a modern contemporary feel whereby it appears to be floating on a wall. Yet we’re not limited to this finish as it can also be framed, giving you that timeless classic look. Discuss your preferences with our consultants.
